The Oster 6058 toaster oven is the third oven our family has used. The first one was basically a toaster. When we upgraded to the second one, we found a pleasant surprise in the functionality. You can bake or toast just about anything (in appropriate quantities) without having to heat up the kitchen. After three years, though, the mechanical temperature setting broke, and I decided to look at similar models with digital controls.

You will pay a little extra for the digital controls. And some people will not prefer them. I found the controls very intuitive and easily mastered, plus you won’t be worrying about mechanical breakage. You may want to look at my posted image of the control pad for the following comments.

The designers opted to forgo a number pad (like you’d see on a microwave oven). Instead, the control pad consists of a simple set of buttons: Want to bake? Hit the bake button. Convection (fan) bake? Hit it again. Broil? Hit it again. The order is specified right above the button. Temperature setting pops up at 300F – press the up or down arrows to change it in 25 degree increments.

Similar settings work for the toast and pizza buttons. For example, the pizza button defaults to 20 minutes. I found that a frozen pizza cooks to perfection at 17 minutes, so I press “Pizza”, “Down”, “Down”, “Down”, “Start”. And when I say “perfection”, I mean that. The entire pizza was cooked evenly and the crust was perfect. Does it get any easier? While I’m thinking of it – a standard frozen pizza fit easily in the oven. Although I have always thought of them as “12 inch pizzas”, in fact they are only 10 inches across. There is a bit more room inside the oven, though; I would guess that pizzas as large as 11 inches across would fit in the oven.

Among other nice touches are the Start and Stop buttons. The start button is a minor safety feature in my opinion – little kids won’t press a single button and have the oven starting up. The stop button ends the countdown timer and shuts off the heating elements. The oven also has an internal light so you don’t have to open the door: just hit the “Lamp” button. And, of course, a clock – probably included because customers expect it. Since there is no delayed cook feature, there really is no need for it.

The product includes a very nice broiler pan with rack. The rack seems just a little lightweight, but I had no problem cooking six thick pork chops on it. (30min @ 375F, BTW). The oven shelf adjusts to three levels. With the broiler pan, you’ll want it on the lowest position.

The oven fit easily under a cabinet, even with a stack of pans (from this and previous ovens) sitting on top. The cord is fairly short, so unlike my previous oven it did not stick out and look unsightly. Finally, the oven did not seem to get abnormally hot (even though others seem to think so). I do not believe there is a safety hazard from this oven – it did not seem to get that hot. However, if you remember that all toaster ovens will have some hot surfaces and you have young children, then you may want to either find an “out-of-reach” place to use this type of product, or forgo it until they are older.

Would I change anything? I’m not really fond of the chrome-look front. I would have preferred a brushed finish there. It does appear to be polished stainless steel, though. The timer bell is fairly quiet, so you may not notice it if you are watching TV in another room. The only other thing is extremely nit-picking: I like the clock and wish it were larger for easier viewing across the room.

Overall, a very good first impression. I hope it holds up for the long haul, because the basic design is solid and worth the five stars.

Our family has been using this oven for almost a year and a half. The product is holding up very well. I’m actually amazed at how easy it is to clean. Since toaster ovens don’t get cleaned that often, when we do get around to cleaning it the surfaces seem to make it rather easy. I especially like the glass front.

We have gotten away from using the big oven for almost everything. The only time we seem to make use of it is when we have extra guests and the food quantity is too big for the Oster (and when we’re making big batches of cookies). Our family of five (six when grandpa is here) is easily served by this toaster oven.

One thing I didn’t mention in my original post is the toasting time. As others have noted, the toast cycle is rather lengthy. This is really due to the time it takes to heat up the elements and the oven. I don’t mind the time it takes (maybe 4 or 5 minutes) but I can understand that it’s not what people may be used to. If your primary purpose is to use this as a toaster, I would caution your choice of this (or any) toaster oven. But as a small oven that handles virtually all your baking needs, my experience is that this oven will more than satisfy you.

    I’m giving this convection/toaster 5 stars based on it’s performance at it’s price range and class. You can spend 3-4 times as much on a professional countertop convection oven like the Franklin convection oven (Amazon ASIN: B000BQ0CP6) for $250 and get a better product. However, I’ve used both and by comparison I think you really get your money’s worth with this product.

    We’ve had ours for about a month now and use it daily. The results are amazing. I’ve made numerous frozen pizzas, a meatloaf, cookies, brownies, loads of toast and lots of french fries among other things. The oven performed quite well in all cases. There is definitely a little bit of a learning curve and I goofed up a few things before I figured out how to use it. I would definitely recommmend reading the directions and following many of the recommendations for rack and food placement. That is actually very important.

    Some examples of “tweaks” are as follows: With brownies you need a lower temperature than the box states when using convection and you might want to use a combination of convection and regular baking for cakes and browines.

    With chocolate chip cookies you want to go with straight convection heat and depending on the mix you use you’ll need to tweak the cycle. Cookies bake in much less time but you can get abolutely perfect and uniformly colored cookies! No more burnt bottoms! For example Ghiardelli dry cookie mix from the box cooks a little differently than the frozen dough that comes in a chub, even though the baking instructions on the packages are about the same. As you might expect you can only make about 6 average cookies, or biscuits at a time.

    The convection bake is excellent for making all kinds of frozen french fries that come out perfect every time. Spring rolls come out great. The oven has several pre-programed cycles, a light, a timer, and every cycle offers the opportunity to tweak the temperature and/or time. There is a nice light inside the unit that makes it easy to check food.

    Other notes: When making toast be sure to follow the directions for setting the rack.

    Major Plusses:

    1. Holds a very consistent temperature
    2. Does a very good job on many types of food – better than a conventional oven
    3. Produces very uniformly cooked foods
    4. Cooks many foods in less time
    5. Bottom tray is easy to remove and clean
    6. Easy to use

    A few drawbacks:

    1. It does not quite fit most 9 x 13 pans, but will cook 12 inch pizzas.
    2. It does get hot and you need to be careful how you open it and where you put your hands.
    3. It only comes with one shelf. I would like two shelves for making cookies.
    4. There is a bit of a “learning curve” if you’re not used to convection
    5. The oven operated at a slightly higher temperature than what my oven thermometer reads, but it holds at one, even temperature very well and it was consistently about the same difference at all ranges from 300 to 450. I’m honestly not sure which temperature was more correct, the oven’s or my thermometer’s. Based on my baking, the oven may be running a tad hotter than it says but it’s easy to adjust. I would recommend checking your oven, as they may differ.

    I wanted a toaster oven which could toast things you can’t put in a toaster (such as bread with cheese on top) as well as to have an alternative to using my large oven when cooking small portions. It also had to have the convection (fan) feature, which I find really helps to cook food faster and more evenly.

    The functionality is all there: it’s spacious and it toasts, bakes, convection bakes, and broils (but I use my main oven for broiling as I find it too messy to use a toaster oven). It even has a little light inside so you can check on the food. And the timer also works as a clock. It’s a great value.

    The downside, and my only reason for not giving this oven 5 stars, is that the outside gets extremely hot, especially the glass door. If you grasp the handle from the top (over-handed), your knuckles get burned by the top lip of the door – which is not insulated. When I spoke with a rep from Oster (kudos for having a toll-free number and a wait time of only 2 minutes), he confirmed that that is the way it is made and there is no solution other than returning it.

    If you don’t have children who may touch the glass door or try to open it, and you can remember to always open it under-handed, this is a very nice oven.

    First let me say that I decided on this oven because I refuse to spend a lot on another toaster oven. They don’t live a long time (except for the Cuisinart), and so why spend top dollar? I love this oven. I also purchased it at Costco ($60.00). It was replacing my old, would never buy again Delonghi Toaster Oven, and a Panasonic Infrared Toaster Oven that went right back to Amazon after 3 days. The only thing that compares is the Cuisinart convection toaster oven that I had. It was THE PERFECT TOASTER OVEN, but a little too small for our needs. If you don’t need a big oven, don’t mess with anything else and get the Cuisinart!

    Yes, it takes eons to make toast in this baby. (Way more than 6 minutes. Most often between 8-11 minutes!) It’s a big oven. But, unlike the other reviewer, my toast, no matter what kind of bread, turns out perfectly golden like my bread was sitting out in St. Tropez. The rack must be in the center position and shaped like a “U” when looking at it from the front for the perfect slice. It also can handle nearly 6 full english muffins at one time. (Great for big families.) I have also found that it will toast things one right after another without getting increasingly browner with each batch. (But it does get faster, with each successive batch.)

    I would like having the unit interior 1/2″ larger from side to side. It will nearly fit a 9″x13″ pan, I mean by less than 1/3″!…which would be great in summer to almost never use my big oven. So, I’m not sure why the manufacturer wouldn’t have gone the extra 1/2″. I mean, it’s already a huge oven…might as well go for it. If you are a small family, or have a super small kitchen, this oven might not be for you. I have a small kitchen, but a family that likes to eat, so this oven, while taking a lot of space, does a lot of work for us, and is worth it.

    The bell when toast is done, is not that loud. So, if you are in another part of the house doing something, you might not hear it.

    I have made toast, 12″ pizza, baked potatoes, fries and chicken strips, muffins, cookies, brownies, roasted chicken, and more in this oven. They all came out beautiful.

    I don’t like that I can’t tell when it is up to temperature for baking, so I have an instant read thermometer to tell me when it is ready. (And yes, it takes forever to get up to temp.) My oven temp is lower than what it reads on the digital touch screen, but it has not adversely affected my baking.

    So, with those caveats, I still love this toaster oven. I can’t recommend it for everyone, but if you identify with my likes and dislikes in this review, you will like this machine.

    I’ve been on a quest since last November to find a convection toaster oven that works like it should. So far I’ve tried four others and none of them worked like they should. I’ve gone through 2 Black & Decker ovens, a GE, and the last one was a Hamilton Beach.
    Now this one works like its supposed to. It’s easy to set the cooking time and temperature on it. The presets for CONVECTION BAKE and BAKE is 350 degrees and 30 minutes. It has a preset for PIZZA that is 400 degrees for 20 minutes. A DEFROST setting is for 150 degrees for 30 minutes. It also has a preset for WARM 30 minutes but the book doesn’t say what the preset temp is for that and it doesn’t show in the display. After testing it I found that it gets too and holds at 175 degrees. The best aspect with this thing is that it actually gets to, and holds within ten degrees, the temperature that its set for! This is the only one out of the five that I have tried that will get to the temperature that its set for, and hold it within 100 degrees of that setting. Most of the ones that I’ve tried were off from 100 to 150 degrees, or more, of what they are set for. When using the convection setting it is nice and quiet. The Hamilton Beach that I tried last, the fan was so loud I could hear it running in the other room. This one is so quiet that I can barely hear it running while standing right in front of it.
    The other thing that I really like with this one is the inside light. It comes on automatically when you press the start button and it shuts off when the timer runs out. You can also turn it on and off with its own button. Its plenty bright enough to see how done what ever is cooking in it is and is something that the other toaster ovens should have. The ovens door closes tight and seems to seal pretty good and the rack inside fits tight enough in its groove that it can be pulled out a few inches without tilting down making it easier to take out what ever your cooking.
    There’s only a couple of things that I don’t particularly care for. One is that the power cord sticks out of the bottom of the oven instead of the back or side. Its no big deal but it makes it a bit awkward keeping it out of the way when moving the oven. The other thing is the crumb tray fell out of it first time I went to set it on the counter and landed edge wise on my bare foot. Again, no big deal really, but it sure did hurt!

    Over all, I do believe that this one is a keeper! At least till Oster makes one with a rotisserie in it.

    I thought I had added that a 9″x13″ cake pan, without handles, just fits inside. I uploaded pictures showing one inside of my oven. The actual size is 9 5/8″ x 13 5/8″, the 9″x13″ is the inside. I also have a nice 2 1/2qt casserole deep dish with lid that just fits nice in it too. The other thing I forgot to add is that it heats up pretty quick too. Some of the others that I had would take 10 or 15 minutes to get up to 350 to 375 degrees. This one takes about 5 to 6 minutes to get up to 375 and a couple more to make 400. It takes about 8 to 10 minutes to heat up and lightly toast a pan of Honey Buns. At 350 they will be hot and a little soft, at 400 they will start getting a little crunchy on the edges and the frosting turning to caramel. Some of the smaller toaster ovens will toast faster and the bigger ones take a lot longer of course. Any who, I’m very happy with this one, it all depends on how long it will last.

    I just purchased this toaster oven and used the convection function for the first time. I really liked it – it baked really fast and the oven unit itself did not get too hot. The only thing I was disappointed in was that it claims to fit a 9 x 13 pan. All the pans I tried would not fit as they had handles. I used an 8-1/2 x 11 with handles and it fit snug. Now I am trying to find a 9 x 13 without handles.

    This oven bakes like a dream. It bakes so evenly I never have to turn things around. Pizzas come out perfectly with a nice, crisp brown bottom. For my purposes, and the price, it bakes as well as or better than the expensive fancy countertop ovens.
